DIAGNOSTIC INVESTIGATIONS: CLINICAL LABOROTARYTESTS - SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS - CORONARY ANGIOGRAPHY - HOW SAFE IS THE PROCEDURE OF ANGIOGRAPHY ? HOW IS THE PROCEDURE CARRIED OUT ? Q. How safe is the procedure of angiography ? A. Coronary angiography is an invasive procedure and involves some risk, though, in experienced hands, the risk is small. Since the information it gives is vital for the success of bypass surgery or angioplasty and cannot be obtained by any other means, we have no option but to accept the risk whenever necessary. Q. How is the procedure carried out ? A. A special catheter is inserted into the main artery at the elbow or inside of the thigh after anaesthetising the site of entry. The catheter, passing through the aorta, enters the right and left coronary arteries and the angiogram is recorded after injecting the contrast medium. Thereafter more dye is injected into the left ventricle and the ventriculogram is recorded, which determines the size of the ventricle and adequacy or otherwise of its contraction and the presence or absence of any aneurysm. The catheter is then removed and the point of insertion sealed. *28\328\8* Cardio & Blood |
